Full in-person classes to resume for all undergrad courses in UP from 2nd semester

The University of the Philippines (UP) announced on Thursday that it would allow 100% in-person classes in all undergraduate programs for the second semester of Academic Year (AY) 2022-2023.

The decision is complementary to the university’s adoption of hybrid and blended learning to equip students for the challenges of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and achieve educational resilience in a volatile and rapidly changing world.

The second semester is scheduled from February to June 2023.

UP noted that it was already holding in-person classes “for laboratory, studio, and practicum courses, among others, and all courses in some of its constituent universities” in the first semester of AY 2022-2023, which began earlier this month.

The university had earlier announced it would shift to blended learning for AY 2022-2023, saying it was “the ideal learning delivery mode for the post-pandemic era.”

Earlier this week, Senator Pia Cayetano hit out at UP and other state universities for not fully implementing face-to-face classes.

At the hearing on the proposed 2023 budget of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and SUCs, the senator had warned UP to conduct face-to-face classes to secure their budget for next year.

“You want budget? Show me you’re making an effort to do the most basic — allow the students to have face-to-face classes. Show me you are making that effort. Because otherwise, I’ll focus my efforts where it is most appreciated,” said the senator, who happens to be the chairperson of the subcommittee of the Senate Committee on Finance.
