Ex-PNP chief Cascolan appointed as DOH undersecretary

The former head of the Philippine National Police, Camilo Cascolan, was appointed as an undersecretary, the Department of Health (DoH) announced on Sunday.

Charade Mercado-Grande, a new assistant secretary, and directors Girlie Veloso, Maria Joyce Ducusin, and Sophia Mancao join Cascolan in the Department of Health.

“Yes, we confirm the receipt of the appointment papers of Mr. Camilo Cascolan, Atty. Charade Mercado-Grande and several directors,” the agency said in a statement.

Full details of their assignments as well as their duties and responsibilities will be made available “as soon as available,” it added.

Netizens questioned whether a person with no medical background is capable of holding a high position at DOH.

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has yet to appoint a DOH secretary. On Thursday Marcos said that he he would only appoint a health secretary if the country’s situation had already returned to normal in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis.
