NCAA suspends JRU’s John Amores indefinitely after on-court brawl
John Amores of Jose Rizal University (JRU) has been suspended indefinitely by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for his actions during the game between Jose Rizal University and De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde in the NCAA Season 98 men’s basketball tournament on Tuesday..
The punishment was imposed by the NCAA Management Committee on Wednesday after thorough consideration by league officials.
Amores charged at the bench of College St. Benilde during the final quarter of their game Tuesday at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City. In the ensuing brawl, he punched and injured a couple of CSB players.
The following players were slapped with a one-game suspension: CSB’s Ladis Lepalam Jr., JRU players Jason Tan, William Sy, Joshua Guiab, Jason Celis, Marwin Dionisio, Jan Marc Abaoag, Jonathan Medina, Karl de Jesus, and CJ Gonzales for entering the court without recognition from table officials during a brawl.
Meanwhile, two-game suspensions were meted to CSB’s Mark Sangco, and JRU’s CJ Flores and Ryan Arenal. Sy was also slapped with another two-game suspension – increasing his sanction to three games. They all committed disrespectful acts before league officials.
Amores is also facing legal action filed against him by NowheretogobutUP, a volunteer group supporting the University of the Philippines’ sports affairs, for punching UP player Mark Belmonte during a preseason match in July resulting in injuries.
