Netizens react to appointment of Daphne Oseña Paez as Palace’s “press briefer”
Is it political sinecure or political nepotism, both or neither?
The appointment of television personality Daphne Oseña Paez as Malacañang Palace’s “press briefer” certainly sent tongues a-wagging on Twitter. Is “press briefer” another name for Press Secretary? Not quite. According to the Palace, the job of a press briefer is to relay news and information about the activities and programs of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
“My role here is to amplify and to communicate the message of President (Ferdinand) Marcos (Jr.) and the Cabinet, and the government…I will be here to brief you every Tuesday, regularly, after Cabinet meetings,” Paez said on her first day on the job.
Palace clarified that she is not the new Palace spokesman and that Marcos will still continue to “speak for himself.”
“I am just here to support the Office of the Press Secretary for now,” she said.
Paez began her career in the media industry as a reporter for ABS-CBN and went on to host lifestyle and magazine shows, including the popular “F,” which she co-hosted with actress journalist Cher Calvin and actress Angel Aquino.
Paez, whose father was a pilot of the president’s father and namesake, Ferdinand E. Marcos, is a staunch supporter of President Bongbong Marcos, a fact that many netizens have called her out for.
On the other hand are Paez’s supporters who wished her well on her new job.
