Onions too expensive? Then don’t buy a whole kilo, advises Dept. of Agriculture

With prices of onions skyrocketing to almost P700 in some markets in Metro Manila, the Department of Agriculture (DA) on Wednesday offered consumers some head-scratching, bordering on satire advice: Don’t buy a whole kilo of them.

In a Super Radyo dzBB interview, DA deputy spokesperson Rex Estoperez said that to be reasonable and practical, consumers should only buy what they need and avoid buying by the kilo.

“To be reasonable on that and practical — pero mukhang maraming magagalit sa ‘kin — e ‘di ‘wag tayong bumili ng isang kilo, di ba? Kung ano lang ang makakaya nating bilhin, ayun muna,” Estoperez said.

To be fair, Estoperez seemed acutely aware of the absurdity of his advice.

He said that in some markets in Metro Manila, large onions were selling at P550/kg, while the smaller ones going for P440/kg.

In reality, the price of onions has skyrocketed to almost P700/kg in select markets, which is higher than the minimum wage of P577 in Metro Manila.

Netizens slammed Estoperez for his absurd logic.

Indeed, one only has to look at the prices of onions in the market and they’re immediately reduced to tears.
