‘Hoy BPI’ goes viral on Twitter after customers report duplicate deductions on app, mobile banking site

Angry customers took to social media on Wednesday, January 4, to complain to the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) about duplicate deductions from their bank accounts which affected transactions made on December 30-31, 2022.

“Hoy BPI” and “0431 Debit Memo” trended on Wednesday morning, when customers reported losing money from duplicate deductions for transactions made on December 30 and 31, and being unable to access their accounts through the online banking site and app.

A debit memo is a general term for all the debits (withdrawal, funds transfer, bills payment, etc.) made on an account while there is no system update yet.

BPI swiftly responded to the barrage of complaints by assuring its customers that their accounts are safe and secure. “Following the double posting of ATM, CAM deposits, POS and e-commerce debit transactions from Dec. 30 to 31, 2022, please be informed that we expect correction of the duplicate transactions within the day,” BPI posted in its advisory.

Before the day ended, BPI reported successfully resolving the duplicate transactions on affected accounts.
