Marcos declares Feb. 24 a ‘special non-working holiday’; WALANG PASOK BUKAS trends on Twitter

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has declared Feb. 24 as a special non-working holiday.
Proclamation No. 167, signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin by the authority of the President on Thursday, enables Filipinos to avail the benefits of a longer weekend pursuant to the principle of holiday economics.
As a result the celebration of the 37th EDSA People Power Revolution anniversary is moved from Feb. 25.
“To enable our countrymen to avail of the benefits of a longer weekend pursuant to the principle of holiday economics, the celebration of EDSA People Power Revolution Anniversary may be moved from 25 February 2023 (Saturday) to 24 February 2023 (Friday), provided that the historical significance of EDSA People Power Revolution Anniversary is maintained,” the proclamation read.
“Now, therefore, I Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., President of the Philippines, by virtue of the powers vested in me by law, do hereby declare Friday, 24, February 2023, as a special (non-working) day throughout the country,” it added.
The country will mark the 37th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution on Feb. 25. The peaceful revolution succeeded in overthrowing the Marcos administration and sending the presidential family into exile in 1986.
Immediately after the holiday proclamation, WALANG PASOK BUKAS went viral on Twitter, with netizens welcoming the unexpected one-day respite from work and school. A few college students, however, were not keen on taking a break, as they expect the holiday to be offset by a Saturday class. Well, only if their professors don’t draw up long weekend plans of their own, that is.
