Fire hits Baguio City Public Market

A fire struck parts of the Baguio City Public Market Saturday night and caused around ₱24 million in damage according to local authorities.

The market caught fire started at around 11:00 pm Saturday, and it was put out at 4:38 am Sunday, the Baguio City Public Information Office (PIO) said.

Mayor Benjamin Magalong said that that the fire razed all of Block 4 and parts of Block 3, sections of the market where vegetables, dry foods and second-hand clothes are sold. It is estimated that 1700 stalls were affected.

Authorities are still determining the cause of the fire.

In the meantime, the market remains operational except for the burned areas.

“Baguio City Public Market” trend on Twitter where netizens expressed concerns for the safety and livelihood of market vendors. A few even speculated that the fire might have been deliberately set in order to hasten a proposal to privatize the market.
