Imelda Marcos niece, Imee Marcos belie rumors of matriarch’s death

A niece of Imelda Marcos and daughter Imee quashed rumors on social media that the family matriarch, former first lady Imelda Marcos, has died.

“Still St(r)ong and Kicking!,” is how Eliza Romualdez-Valtos captioned an old photo of Marcos on Twitter, with the hashtag #notofakenews #imelda #firstlady #matriarch

Rumors about Marcos’s death started circulating on social media following speculative tweets by certain accounts on Twitter. Although the blind-time style tweets did not name the former first lady, they appeared to suggest that another controversial figure had been outlived yet again by 99-year former Defense Secretary Juan Ponce Enrile.

Marcos’s daughter, Senator Imee Marcos, said the fake rumors had been circulating since last week and admonished whoever were spreading it.

“Last week pa yan, ang bad ng nagkakalat,” the senator told reporters via text message.

“Imelda” and “Marcos” became instant trending topics on Twitter starting Thursday afternoon, as the false rumor spread like wildfire on social media.

Many netizens responded to the rumor by posting memes, while others, upon learning the rumor was false, took the opportunity to remind the public that Marcos was found guilty of seven counts of graft by the Sandiganbayan in November 2018.
