Could you be a La Sallian guy’s type? Only if you’re a classic Filipina like Mariah Clara
A Tiktok clip went viral on Wednesday in which a young man describes the kind of girls that guys from a prestigious private university go for.
Speaking for himself, Lance Raymundo II reveals that young men who study at De La Salle University, one of the most expensive institutions of higher learning in the Philippines, actually like girls who are conservative.
In the Tiktok clip, Raymundo says that “One of the most common conceptions about guys from La Salle is that we like wild girls. The truth is we actually like girls who are conservative and classic Filipinas. You know, like, Mariah Clara.”
The Tiktoker is presumably referring to Maria Clara, is the tragic heroine of Jose Rizal’s novel “Noli Me Tangere.” Her character embodies the traditional, feminine ideal in Filipino culture. She is certainly not to be confused with the multi-Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter Mariah Carey.
The post includes the hashtags #conyo #funny so it cannot be completely ruled out that the clip is satirizing how privileged youths speak in the easily identifiable cadences of conyo talk. “Conyo” is often a derogatory term that refers to a type of person who comes from a privileged background and speaks in a mixture of English and Tagalog that conflates the enunciatory characteristics of the two languages.
Netizens could not pass up the chance to memefy the clip in its conyotic glory.
This wouldn’t be Twitter without somebody finding offense (on behalf of somebody else) where there’s none, so one netizen found another person’s preference for conservative girls and classic Filipinas as reeking of misogyny.
Thankfully, sanity prevailed when other netizens called him out for actually reinforcing the conversative-revolutionary dichotomy that divides women into two mutually exclusive categories and for dunking on another person’s preference for a romantic interest.
