MTRCB: “Maid in Malacañang” a dramatization, not a documentary
The Movie and Television Review Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) issued a statement on Thursday, August 4, 2020, explaining its Parental Guidance (PG) classification of “Maid in Malacañang” while acknowledging that director Darryl Yap’s controversial film is not a documentary but a dramatization of the last 72 hours of the Marcos family in Malacañang Palace.
What follows is the full statement, signed by MTRCB Chairman DIorella Maria “Lala” Sotto-Antonio:
“The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board confirms that it has reviewed the motion picture, Maid in Malacañang, and has given it a Parental Guidance (PG) classification.
“A PG classification means that a motion picture may contain themes that require parental supervision and guidance. We also note that the said motion picture is a dramatization of the last seventy-two hours of the Marcos family in the Palace in 1986 and does not purport to be documentary.
“While the PG rating serves to guide viewers, and was assigned by the Board based on its own judgment applying contemporary Filipino cultural values as standard, parents are encouraged to conduct their own assessment and use their best judgment to guide their children’s viewing activities.”

“Maid in Malacañang” has come under fire for purported “historical inaccuracies,” among which is its depiction of the late former President Corazon C. Aquino playing mah-jong with the Carmelite nuns of Cebu City while the Marcos family flees an angry mob that is about to storm Malacañang Palace.
